Root Canal Treatment
Dental root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a procedure during which the inflamed pulp (a collection of nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels located inside the tooth) is removed with specialized instruments and the root canals are filled with a special material. This procedure allows patients to keep their natural teeth longer and avoid tooth extraction.
Symptoms that may indicate a need for root canal treatment include:
- Long-lasting tooth pain
- Acute, sharp, and sudden pain that may spread to surrounding tissues
- Pain that usually occurs in the evening or at night
- Constant, sometimes stabbing or tearing, throbbing pain.
It’s worth noting that sometimes a tooth may not present any symptoms but an x-ray or a clinical examination may reveal the need for a root canal treatment. It’s always best to consult with a dentist or endodontist if you suspect you may need a root canal treatment.
